As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting the photonics industry at a tertiary level, Radiantis recently participated in the Thesis Committee of the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), which awarded a PhD to one of its most recent graduates, Dr. Can Yao.Dr. Can received the award for her thesis entitled, ‘Light Generation and Manipulation from Nonlinear Randomly Distributed Domains in SBN’, which set out to examine non-linear optics and the generation and propagation of nonlinear light from crystalline structures with disordered nonlinear domains presenting an homogenous refractive index. She was supported and supervised in her efforts by Dr. Jordi Martorell and Dr. Francisco Rodríguez of the ICFO.Radiantis was represented on the Thesis Committee by Dr. Adolfo Esteban, along with Professor Jorge Bravo Abad of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Professor Ramon Vilaseca of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Our heartiest congratulations go to Dr. Can for her ground-breaking work and for her dogged determination to explore a very interesting area of photonics,” said Esteban.

“We were particularly impressed by her examination of light propagation and scattering when a nonlinear interaction takes place and the potential applications of this research for technologies such as random media, image formation, satellite communication, astronomy or microscopy.”

Dr. Can Yao received her Master degree from the Institute of Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Science, China, before joining the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics group at ICFO, led by Dr. Jordi Martorell.
